Yeap! You got it! It's the time Mariah Carey starts defrosting!
Last Christmas I made some Christmas ornaments with our local Malaysian batik as gifts for my host family's extended family and for friends I've made in the neighbourhood. I initially wanted to buy them before I went over to the US but couldn't find any, so I had to make some myself. I bought some batik fabric on Shopee, jute/hemp string and used light sticks. There, I got a roll of white ribbon from Michaels and the wood pendants from Dollar Tree. Oh! I also thrifted a box of Christmas ribbons! I had some help from my host dad with drilling a small hole on each of the wood pendant that doesn't come with a tiny hole on the top.
The hardest part about this craft is attaching the wood pendants to the ring. Ideally, I would use a clear string, like a nylon string or a clear fishing line. Coincidently, my host dad do enjoy fishing. So I asked if he could spare me a few metres sorry, yards of it. He went through his tackle box and could only find some blue ones. I looked at it and went ohhh okayyy hmmm that's alright, thank you! Because it's electric blue! T.T I mean... if it were light blue, I might still be able to use it but not electric blue!
Even if it's a Christmas colour like red or green, I don't think it'll go too well with my craft because I'm a perfectionist like that hahhaa. If it's gold or silver, maaayyybe but let's be real, people who goes fishing are not so extra that they would buy a gold or silver line. No supply, no demand. Besides, we don't know how that would affect the probability of catching a fish.
So I had to brainstorm and make do with common items around the house because I didn't have the time to go to the store because
a) I kinda forgot to get them when I got the ribbons
b) I didn't want to spend US dollars getting a whole roll when I only need like 1m for all the ornaments I'm making (collectively). I would have no use for it after that anyway
c) it was to late in the night to go to the store anyway because I'm the procrastinating queen, no surprise there
I thought and thought and finally settled on.... dental floss! Who knew those babies come in handy to save your teeth aannddd your last minute crafting woes. After all that drama, please enjoy the outcome of my crafting efforts at midnight lol.
Just curious, what other material (that is easily available in a common household and is a strong material) could I have used to hang the wood pendants?
Experimented with one of the ribbons from the thrifted ribbon box. This is my least favourite because of the bulkiness and I don't think the colours go too well together ;(
My personal favourite, also host mum's favourite because of the neutral and soothing colours! And it's an angel, come on! Need we say more?
Fan of having varieties and allowing options for people to choose :) the star and bell wood pendants were great for writing things at the back. G-mom (host kids' grandma) had me write my name and the year at the back so she could remember me :')

Andddd now we're back to Christmas 2022 in the upcoming weeks, since I have a lot of time on my hands, I have invested in making the batik ornaments again but this time, with better materials! Since I've gone through all my used light sticks, I have gotten wood ones (better for the environment and because the used light sticks had the tendency to break, leaking the toxic chemicals. Gee I hope those don't happen to the ones I made and gave away). And instead of using dental floss, I got a mini drill and some eye screws and jump rings to hang the wood pendants! Definitely looking more professionally made now *proud*

Last but not least, a snowman! RM47
It's the least frosty snowman because I thought it's more eco friendly to not paint it white. Also left it without any features (eyes, nose, mouth and buttons) because I think it looks simple and nice like that. Another way to look at it is that you could paint it white or draw them on your own for the fun of it and risk ruining it because I'm too chicken to attempt that lol
Oh and did I forget to mention that these are plastic free, eco friendly Christmas ornaments? The batik fabric used in the making of these ornaments are what I already have, the black top hats for Mr not-so-Frosty is made of wood buttons, his scarf from scraps and his base from buttons (I raided my mum's button box. Hope she doesn't need any of the buttons I stole!)
